After Avignon, the Chiesa delle Anime del Purgatorio in Naples, the Salpêtrière Chapel in Paris, Nice, and Lille, Ernest Pignon-Ernest is presenting a new version of his installation Estasi, dedicated to the great mystics, during the Venice Biennale.
It is based on the image of Mary Magdalene symbolically inscribed in the Venetian church of the Penitentes. Following his collages in the streets of Naples, Ernest Pignon-Ernest has engaged in a very free dialogue with the texts of the great Christian mystics, wondering how to represent what cannot be seen. He has responded to this question with both highly detailed drawings and the shaping of the sheets of paper that support these drawings and their inscription in space.
A gradual increase in lighting reveals that the entire installation is set up on a dark body of water, producing a profound and symbolic reversal of the architecture and images.
