A great artist from Australia comes to Venice for three winters in a row to work on a new idea: gardens engraved on glass that intertwine on multiple layers of transparency, and are reflected by a mirrored bottom. This show presents a selection of drawings by Rosslynd Piggott, and two works from the new series in world preview.

The exhibition Garden fracture / Mirror in Vapour: Part 1 displays the results of this collaboration and the new corpus of glass works. Together with the very first work with engraved glass sheets, also a series of drawings, on which the images slowly dissolve until they disappear and fade into translucent white cellulose. The drawings on paper are both the predecessors and the continuations of the glass works, with almost imperceptible pencil marks corresponding to the consistency of the sharp stone wheel that gently translates the images onto the glass.

The glass works made in Murano are created through an unusual and fascinating stratification of glass plates engraved with botanical images superimposed in several layers. A mirror lies beneath the glass resulting in a captivating effect of reflection and refraction adding depth and substance to the delicate works. Etched glass and empty space alternate, and the mirror provides a backdrop that doubles the floral scenes creating an almost vertiginous element as well as presenting a reflection of the viewer, albeit distorted and ambiguous.

With her works the viewer can immerse him/herself into a garden, conceived as a space for imagination, intangible, wonder and pleasure. Rosslynd Piggott was born in Melbourne in 1958, she currently lives and works in Melbourne.
